Most common types of spine conditions

LOWER BACK PAIN

Pain in the lower back or buttocks and back of the hip is a very common condition. Most are temporary and have no serious cause. Sometimes, they do not resolve and can affect life and work. Dangerous causes of low back pain are rare. Common causes of back pain are arthritis, disc degeneration, slipped discs etc. More serious causes are spine infection, spine cancer, fractures etc.
Pain can come on gradually or suddenly after twisting or carrying something. It can hurt after standing for a while or after sitting for a long time. Sleep can be disturbed. There can also be pain going down the leg. Stiffness is a common symptom as well. Soreness after activities is not unusual.
Most back pain can be treated with simple exercises and pain medicine. Life style and posture correction is useful for long term well-being.
Please reach out to us if you wish to discuss any concerns you might have.

NECK PAIN

Pain in the region of the neck and back of the shoulder is one of the commonest spine problems. It usually happens in people doing a deskjob. The symptoms may be felt only at the end of the day. It can be a burning sensation behind the shoulder. There may be pain or numbness down the arm. Pain can go up the back of the head and to the jaw area.
Common causes are poor posture and ergonomics, disc degeneration or nerve irritation in the neck. Simple measures such as posture correction, simple analgesia and exercises can be effective.
Sometimes, the pain is due to slipped disc in the neck that is irritating a nerve. If there is also weakness or numbness in the arm, further investigation is advisable.
Please reach out to us if you wish to discuss any concerns you might have.

SLIPPED DISC (SCIATICA)

Slipped disc, or herniated disc, is a condition where there is a protrusion of the jelly between the spinal bones. This can press on the nerve and cause pain down the leg along with numbness, weakness etc. Back pain can also be significant.
Most such symptoms resolve with supportive management. Procedures such as nerve injections, nucleoplasty can also be considered. If there is worsening weakness or any disturbance of urine function, urgent surgery may be indicated. Rarely the pressure on the nerve is from a sinister lesion such as a tumour. An MRI scan will help to define such situations.

SCOLIOSIS

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine has an abnormal curvature, often developing in early childhood or adolescence. You may notice uneven shoulders or hips. There may be uneven appearance of the back. Scoliosis is rarely painful.
The curve may become bigger and sometimes serial xrays may be needed to monitor progress. Larger curves are curves that are worsening may need active management with braces. Surgery is sometimes indicated.
If you have any concerns, early medical review is advisable.
